Mario Kart DS - The Greatest Kart Racer Ever?
You may be wondering why we've decided to bring you a review for a game that was released in 2005. We had a long winded answer worked out but management told us they prefer we just "tell the truth." So in the spirit of honesty... we missed this one. Yep, it went right over our heads. SO ON WITH THE REVIEW.
With any sequel the object is always simple, improve, improve, improve (except in the case of Uwe Boll films...). Obviously, we expected Mario Kart DS to be superior to Mario Kart and MK Double Dash in at least a few ways. Superior it is and in more than just a few ways.
Like a cold glass of milk with a glass of chocolate cake, Mario Kart DS is refreshing and delicious. The first new feature of note is the use of the bottom screen as a top view screen. At first this feature may seem superfluous but after a few hours you may realize how functional this addition is. You can see other racers and enemy projectiles coming up from the rear.
Returning are the different modes you've come to love including battle and time trial. So whether you have 7 friends to play with or plan to go solo, the game has plenty of modes and surprises in store to keep you going.
Furthermore, Mario Kart DS is the first Mario Kart game to employ a useful online component. Though it isn't flawless, it serves it's purpose in that it allows you to play your favorite kart racer against any DS owner in the world. And probably the coolest feature is that you can play with your friends who own a DS but don't have a Mario Kart DS cartridge. There is some limitation on the courses that your friends may compete on but this is a more than welcome feature!
All-in-all, Mario Kart DS is the greatest Mario Kart game ever made and more importantly, the best Kart Racer Ever made.
We give this one 5 out of 5 koopa shells.
